President Trump’s 2020 campaign strategy seems to focus, in part, on his continuing to paint Democrats as extremists — perhaps especially on abortion. During a rally in Wisconsin over the weekend, he blasted his opposition for essentially supporting infanticide for backing late-term abortion laws in New York and Virginia.

Speaking before the crowd of Wisconsin MAGA enthusiasts, the president accused Democrats of “aggressively pushing extreme late-term abortion, allowing children to be ripped from their mothers’ womb right up until the moment of birth,” according to LifeNews.

The president then took a shot at Wisconsin’s Democratic Governor Tony Evers, who said last week he would veto a bill that would help babies born alive following a botched abortion.

“Your Democrat governor here in Wisconsin shockingly stated that he will veto legislation that protects Wisconsin babies born alive [after an attempted abortion],” Trump said.

Evers argued last week that Wisconsin already has laws on the books protecting babies, adding that women should be allowed to make choices about their “healthcare.”

“I think those protections already exist,” Evers said. “We have all sorts of issues to deal with in the state of Wisconsin and to pass a bill that is redundant seems to be not a productive use of time. And clearly I ran on the belief — and I still believe — that women should be able to make choices about their healthcare. But this deals with a specific issue that’s already been resolved.”

After blasting Evers, the president circled back to Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, who infamously said earlier this year that a baby born alive could be denied healthcare if the mother did not want to keep it.

“The baby is born. The mother meets with the doctor. They take care of the baby. They wrap the baby beautifully. And then the doctor and the mother determine whether or not they will execute the baby,” Trump said at the rally. “I don’t think so.”

Indeed, the scenario Trump described is nearly identical to the way Governor Ralph Northam described it during a radio interview at the time:

When we talk about third-trimester abortions, these are done with the consent of the mother, with the consent of physicians, more than one physician by the way, and it’s done in cases where there may be severe deformities, there may be a fetus which is non-viable. So in this particular example, if the mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen, the infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, the infant would be resuscitated if this is what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physician and the mother.

President Trump began hitting the Democrats for their extreme abortion stances during his 2019 State of the Union Address.

“There could be no greater contrast to the beautiful image of a mother holding her infant child than the chilling displays our nation saw in recent days,” President Trump said in February. “Lawmakers in New York cheered with delight upon the passage of legislation that would allow a baby to be ripped from the mother’s womb moments from birth.”

He continued: “These are living, feeling, beautiful babies who will never get the chance to share their love and dreams with the world. And then, we had the case of the Governor of Virginia where he stated he would execute a baby after birth. To defend the dignity of every person, I am asking Congress to pass legislation to prohibit the late-term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother’s womb. Let us work together to build a culture that cherishes innocent life.”
