In a surprise twist, a new CNN-SSRS poll purports to show that former congressman Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) is best-situated to defeat President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders and coquettish former Vice President Joe Biden came in just behind O’Rourke, followed by intersectional darlings Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) and South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

The Hill reports:

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) leads President Trump by 10 points in a hypothetical general election matchup, according to a new CNN–SSRS poll.

The survey released Thursday shows O’Rourke with support from 52 percent of registered voters, compared with Trump’s 42 percent. Two percent of voters said they wouldn’t support either candidate, and 4 percent said they had no opinion.

O’Rourke held the widest lead over Trump among other Democratic presidential candidates who were included in the potential matchup.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and former Vice President Joe Biden tied for second place behind O’Rourke, with each leading Trump by 6 points.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) followed with a 4-point lead over Trump, while South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) led the president by 3 points.

The CNN-SSRS poll was conducted from April 25-28, and has a margin of error of 3.8%. The poll shows that, although 56% approve of the soaring economy, only 45% currently have an overall favorable opinion of President Trump. One possible explanation for the dissonant numbers is that, despite the economic news, the president is polling underwater in terms of his handling of each of health care, immigration, foreign affairs, and race relations.

The CNN-SSRS results are more than a little bit surprising, considering that prediction market website PredictIt currently has O’Rourke pegged as the seventh most likely Democrat to win the party’s 2020 presidential nomination.

O’Rourke has also not been a stranger to controversial headlines, of late. As The Daily Wire reported, an officer at the scene of O’Rourke’s much-hyped 1998 DWI crash recently confirmed that O’Rourke tried to flee the scene of the alcohol-induced wreck that he caused. The Texas Tribune noted:

The former police officer who arrested Beto O’Rourke for driving drunk in 1998, along with the sergeant who signed the incident report, both say they believe now what they reported at the time: that O’Rourke tried to leave the scene of the wreck he caused.

O’Rourke admits he was intoxicated and says there is no justification for his actions, but he has denied that he tried to flee. …

Neither the investigating officer, Richard Carrera, nor his former supervisor, Gary Hargrove, specifically recalls the events of that night more than 20 years ago. But both of the former Anthony Police Department officers told The Texas Tribune they have no doubt the report they compiled and signed is accurate.

“I believe we have contradicting stories here,” said Carrera, who arrested the 26-year-old O’Rourke and took him to a police station to undergo a breath test. “I stand by my report.

O’Rourke also recently took the highly tendentious position that Planned Parenthood, the nation’s number one abortion mill, actually saves lives on net.
