Allies of President Donald Trump are highlighting a statement from a Democratic member of Congress that they say reveals the true motivation behind the calls to have the president impeached.
Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) was defending his support for impeachment despite the practical political implications of such a controversial act by Congress, when he revealed the reasoning behind his advocacy.
“I’m concerned that if we don’t impeach this president, he will get re-elected,” said Green on MSNBC. “If we don’t impeach him, he will say he’s been vindicated.
“He will say the Democrats had an overwhelming majority in the House and didn’t take up impeachment,” he continued. “He will say we have a constitutional duty to do it if it was there and we didn’t. He will say he’s been vindicated.”
The comments made such a stir that the president responded from his Twitter account on Monday.
“In other words, Dems can’t win the election fairly. You can’t impeach a president for creating the best economy in our country’s history,” he responded.
Rep. Green said in his tweet that he was being misquoted.
“Mr. President, YOU WILL FACE IMPEACHMENT for factual obstruction and/or actual bigotry in policy. You are not above the law. You have a date with destiny,” he responded.
“[President Trump,] tweeting me out of context won’t alter your date with destiny! I will speak for myself,” he said in a second tweet, with a link to a video of his full remarks.
