Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden shrunk back from blistering attacks by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) over his “middle of the road” position on tackling climate change.

“I’ve never been middle of the road on the environment,” Biden said when asked by a reporter if he thought Ocasio-Cortez was talking about him.

“Tell her to check the statements that I made and look at my record,” he added. “She’ll find that nobody has been more consistent about taking on the environment and the green revolution than I have.”

The freshman member of Congress attacked Biden without mentioning his name after reports that he was seeking a “middle of the road” compromise on fighting global climate change.

“This is a dealbreaker,” she said in a tweet. “There is no ‘middle ground’ w/ climate denial & delay.”

“Blaming ‘blue collar’ Americans as the main opponents to bold climate policy is gas lobbyist 101,” she continued. “We’re not going to solve the climate crisis w/ this lack of leadership. Our kids’ lives are at stake.”

She also attacked him during a raucous speech on Monday.

“I will be damned if the same politicians who refused to act then come back today and say we need a ‘middle of the road’ approach to save our lives!” she said.

The Biden campaign says they will be publicizing his plan for climate change soon.

“You never heard me say middle of the road,” Biden said about Ocasio-Cortez. “I don’t think she was talking about me.”

In April, Ocasio-Cortez explicitly said she didn’t want to see Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate.

“This idea that we could back to the good old days with Obama, with Obama’s vice president,” she said. “I think there’s an emotional element to that, but I don’t want to go back. I want to go forward.”
