A Malaysian teenager jumped to her death after issuing a poll on Instagram asking her followers if she should take her own life, according to reports.
What are the details?
On Wednesday, Reuters reported that the unnamed 16-year-old girl committed suicide on Monday after she shared a question to her Instagram Story feature asking followers, “Really Important, Help Me Choose D/L [death or life].”
The report noted that authorities revealed that the teen’s followers voted 69 percent in favor of choosing death in the hours leading up to her death. Wong Ching Yee, Instagram’s head of communications in the Asia-Pacific, revealed that after the poll ran for 24 hours, the votes had swung to 88 percent in favor of choosing to keep living.
The teen reportedly suffered from depression.
Police Chief Aidil Bolhassan told Reuters that an autopsy report will be conducted to determine whether there were other contributing factors that resulted in the girl’s death.
The outlet reported that lawmakers have voiced concerns over the girl’s death, and have requested that officials pursue a criminal investigation into the teen’s death.
Ramkarpal Singh, who is a member of parliament, issued a sobering response on the matter.
“Would the girl still be alive today if the majority of netizens on her Instagram account discouraged her from taking her own life?” he asked. “Would she have heeded the advice of netizens to seek professional help had they done so?”
What did Instagram say?
Instagram issued a statement of sympathy to the teen’s family and encouraged users to report concerning behaviors.
“As part of our own efforts, we urge everyone to use our reporting tools and to contact emergency services if they see any behaviour that puts people’s safety at risk,” Wong said.
