Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson responded to a mocking tweet by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) by taking a shot at her stance on abortion Wednesday, according to Fox News.
Carson has been the subject of significant mockery after a hearing before the House Financial Services Committee on Tuesday, particularly an exchange with Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) during which he misheard the acronym “REO” as the word “Oreo.”
Omar’s tweet focused on a different moment. Carson was being questioned by Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) about cuts made to the HUD budget and the potential impact on residents of federally-subsidized housing. (Starts at around 3:30 in the video)
Carson, who by that point in the hearing seemed somewhat fed up with the proceedings, had responded to a question from Pressley by saying “You already know the answer to that,” leading to the above exchange.
On Twitter on Tuesday night, Omar wrote “Not sure he was fully awake, maybe he meant to reclaim his time back to sleep.”
Carson responded to the shot by changing the subject to the Democratic Party’s stance on abortion.
“Since you brought it up…I know what it’s like to actually be sleepy, especially after 18-hour surgeries and operating on babies in the womb,” Carson wrote Wednesday morning. “I hope @IlhanMN knows I care about all people, even those she doesn’t recognize as having a right to life.”
Omar has been a vocal critic of recent pro-life laws such as Alabama’s.
“No child or woman should be forced to have pregnancy against her own will,” Omar has said. “These laws do not protect women’s rights it protects the violator committing these crimes.”
