A Mississippi Republican lawmaker is under fire after reportedly assaulting his wife when she undressed too slowly for sex.
What are the details?
According to the Sun Herald, police visited the home of 58-year-old GOP state Rep. Doug McLeod on Saturday night to find the lawmaker’s wife bloodied. Responding to a call for a domestic incident, the deputies said McLeod was intoxicated and holding a glass of alcohol when they arrived.
McLeod reportedly said, “Are you kidding me?” upon finding police at his door, and began yelling into the house that the police were at the door.
“Mr. McLeod had slurred speech and walked slow in a zigzag pattern,” one deputy observed. The deputy added that McLeod was so drunk that he needed to grab a handrail to keep upright.
The investigation found that McLeod reportedly punched his wife in the face on or near the bed, and blood was found at the scene on the floor and bed. McLeod purportedly punched his wife because she was undressing too slowly before sex.
McLeod’s wife told authorities that her husband “just snapped,” as he reportedly often does when he is drinking.
USA Today reported that two women were standing at the top of the stairs when deputies entered.
“Both appeared frightened,” according to the outlet. “McLeod’s wife eventually came outside after deputies assured her they would keep her away from her husband.”
Deputies took McLeod into custody at the scene.
Authorities arrested McLeod, who has represented both George and Stone counties since 2012, on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. He is free on bail.
What was the reaction?
Republican House Speaker Philip Gunn said that McLeod should step down if he did assault his wife.
In a statement, Gunn said, “I have attempted to contact Rep. McLeod to request his resignation, if, in fact, these allegations are true. These actions are unacceptable for anyone.”
On Tuesday, state Sen. David Blount called for McLeod’s resignation as well.
In a tweet, Blount wrote, “Rep. McLeod should resign.”
Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
