After retiring his world-saving alter-ego Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, actor Robert Downey Jr. has unveiled his big technological plan to save the world from climate change and other environmental disasters.
According to Variety, the “Avengers” star has launched the Footprint Coalition, a group dedicated to using “advanced technologies for the good of the environment,” such as robotics and nanotechnology. He unveiled his plan while delivering the opening keynote for Amazon’s Re:Mars conference in Las Vegas.
“Between robotics and nanotechnology, we could clean up the planet significantly, if not totally, in 10 years,” Downey Jr. said.
The actor went on to praise the roundtable of experts that led him to this impressive conclusion. “God, I love experts. They’re like Wikipedia with character defects,” he joked.
Surprisingly, unlike other actors who have jumped into the climate change debate, Robert Downey Jr. actually admitted his own lifestyle contributes to the alleged crisis, referring to himself as a “carbon footprint nightmare colossus.”
“I have this quiet sense of crisis,” he said. “I’m a one-man carbon footprint nightmare colossus.”
Downey Jr. did not share exact details about Footprint Coalition, and a website for the group that went live shortly after his talk features little more than a newsletter signup.
According to Forbes, the Marvel veteran also has plans to produce a YouTube series alongside his wife, Susan Downey, about artificial intelligence, which will be broadcast on YouTube Red.
“We are excited to be in business with the smart creative minds behind this innovative new series,” said Susanne Daniels, global head of original content at YouTube. “There is so much to discover, and this series will take us on a fascinating journey as we explore the exciting developments in the world of AI and glimpse into the future.”
Susan Downey said she hopes the series will show artificial intelligence in a new and exciting light. “Robert and I share a curiosity for AI, a complicated and often polarizing subject. Our aim is to explore AI through a lens of objectivity and accessibility, in a thoroughly bold, splashy, and entertaining way,” she said.
Of the entire “Avengers” cast, Robert Downey Jr. is easily the most politically mild of the whole bunch, especially when compared to the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Don Cheadle, and Scarlett Johansson, all of whom have endorsed far-left positions on a number of issues. Though Downey Jr. did criticize Donald Trump’s bid for the White House in 2016, he has previously shown more conservative leanings in the past.
“I have a really interesting political point of view, and it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal,” Downey Jr. told the New York Times in 2008. “You can’t. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics every since.”
