A helicopter crashed into a building in midtown Manhattan Monday at the intersection of 51st Street and 7th Avenue. The FDNY has confirmed that the pilot of the helicopter has died.
This location is just north of Time’s Square. It is not clear at this point what caused the crash and how many casualties there might be. There is currently heavy rain in New York City, and visibility is low.
In a press briefing, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that the helicopter had tried to make a hard or emergency landing on the roof of the building, and that this had created a fire. He said he did not know whether or not the building had a helipad. Fox News later confirmed that there was not a landing pad on top of the building. The fire on top of the building has since been brought under control.
He also acknowledged that when he first heard of the crash “as a New Yorker, you have a level of PTSD from 9/11.” However, he said that there was no indication that this was in any way terrorism.
The FDNY identified the building as a high rise at 787 7th Avenue. The pilot is believed to be the only casualty.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
