Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham is reading the riot act to members of the Democratic Party who are expressing great outrage that President Trump said he’d listen to opposition research from foreigners.

That’s because, as the South Carolina senator explains, this is precisely what the Democrats did in 2016.

Actually, they did a lot more, going out and actively soliciting foreign intervention.

Trump’s comment came in an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, a former Clinton confidant and Democrat operative. Trump was asked if his campaign would accept information from foreigners or hand it over to the FBI.

Maybe “both,” the president responded to the hypothetical question.

“I think you might want to listen, there isn’t anything wrong with listening,” Trump continued. “If somebody called from a country, Norway, [and said] ‘we have information on your opponent’ – oh, I think I’d want to hear it,” he said.

The Washington Post was among those reporting on a number of condemning comments from Democrats.

The newspaper said, “In the interview’s aftermath, Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke were among those arguing that Trump’s words were more reason to begin impeachment proceedings.”

Warren wailed on social media, “A foreign government attacked our 2016 elections to support Trump, Trump welcomed that help, and Trump obstructed the investigation.”

In reality,  FBI special counsel Robert Mueller, who spent more than two years exhaustively investigating those claims, said there was absolutely no collusion on the part of Trump or anyone in his campaign, and he brought no charges of obstruction.

Nevertheless, socialist Bernie Sanders claimed, “We have a president that neither understands the Constitution of the United States or respects the Constitution.”

The Post report said, “Former vice president Joe Biden and Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) and Michael F. Bennet (D-Colo.) denounced Trump for, as Biden put it, ‘once again welcoming foreign interference in our elections.’”

But Graham, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, called them all out.

“First, I believe that it should be practice for all public officials who are contacted by a foreign government with an offer of assistance to their campaign – either directly or indirectly – to inform the FBI and reject the offer,” he wrote on social media.

But, he said, that didn’t happen in the 2016 presidential campaign.

His complete explanation is found here.

He said he had made that very point with FBI Director Chris Wray previously.

It was during 2016, Graham said, “we had a major American political party hire a foreign national, Christopher Steele, to dig up dirt on an American presidential candidate.”

That would be the Democratic Party, in the person of the Democratic National Committee, as well as candidate Hillary Clinton.

“As if that was not bad enough, the foreign national compiled an unverified dossier that was then used by the FBI to obtain a warrant against an American citizen and surveil an American presidential campaign,” Graham said.

He continued, “It has also come to light that the foreign national had a well-known political bias, was doing everything in his power to harm an American candidate’s electoral changes, and sought to directly influence who the American people elected as their next president.

“American electoral campaigns should be run by, for, and decided by the American people. Foreign influence in our electoral process is and has been a problem,” Graham said.

He suggested that Congress ensure that foreign political operatives are not allowed to intervene in the American political system.

“Finally, the outrage some of my Democratic colleagues are raising about President Trump’s comments will hopefully be met with equal outrage that their own party hired a foreign national to do opposition research on President Trump’s campaign…..

“…. And that information, unverified, was apparently used by the FBI to obtain a warrant against an American.”

Twitter news aggregator Twitchy noted that Graham’s efforts were bringing “some much-needed sanity to the ongoing liberal outrage over President Trump saying he may accept dirt on the eventual Dem nominee from a foreign power.”

“Libs should be just as outraged over the Steele dossier and Sen. Graham wants to fight both types of meddling,” the commentary said.

Radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh also excoriated the Democrats over their complaints.

“That’s what the Mueller report conclusion is, that the Russians made numerous attempts to infiltrate the Trump campaign, that they made numerous attempts to pass off dirty information on Crooked Hillary, and the Trump campaign didn’t take it.”

He said, “The difference here, folks, is very simple, but it’s gonna go past the vast majority of Americans because of the way the media is covering this. Trump talks about it, but he didn’t do it. Mueller report, he didn’t do it. The Democrats do it! And they’re having conniption fits today over the fact that Trump said he might do it, yeah, he would do it. Meanwhile, they do it! They did it!”
