CNN host John King upbraided former Vice President Joe Biden for his latest gaffe involving his memories of dealing with segregationist politicians in his past.

“In the middle of all this, the democratic frontrunner, Joe Biden, said something at a fundraiser last night, I’m going to call it insensitive,” King said.

“It’s much worse than that,” he added. “I don’t know what to call it except stupid.”

King went on to explain that Biden had referred to his memories of dealing with politicians who were advocates of racial segregation, and said that they had been able to negotiate civilly, unlike politicians of today.

“Those were two racist members of the United States Senate,” King said.

“It adds to the already sort of high burden he’s trying to make to modernize himself if you will,” added CNN correspondent Jeff Zeleny, who reported that Biden had been told by aides numerous times to stop using examples of civility with segregationists.

Here are the comments King called “stupid”:

Well, guess what? At least there was some civility. We got things done. We didn’t agree on much of anything. We got things done. We got it finished. But today, you look at the other side and you’re the enemy. Not the opposition, the enemy. We don’t talk to each other anymore.”

President candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) condemned the comments from Biden, calling them “misinformed and wrong.”

“I have a great deal of respect for Vice President Biden,” said Harris, “but to coddle the reputations of segregationists—of people who, if they had their way, I would literally not be standing here as a member of the U.S. Senate—is misinformed and wrong.”
