Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) claimed Monday that female migrants at border detention centers are being forced to access drinking water from toilet bowls. However, the freshman lawmaker fled from a local reporter who questioned the seriousness of her claim.

Speaking with media outside a detention center Monday, Ocasio-Cortez claimed she witnessed immigration authorities telling female migrants to drink water from toilets.

“There’s abuse in these facilities, there is abuse,” Ocasio-Cortez said, speaking of Customs and Border Patrol agents.

“This was them on their best behavior, and they put [migrants] in a room with no running water,” she claimed. “These women were being told by CBP officers to drink out of the toilet. They were drinking water out of the toilet and that was them knowing a congressional visit was coming. This is CBP on their best behavior, telling people to drink out of the toilet.”

A reporter listening to Ocasio-Cortez questioned, “Did you see somebody actually do that?”

In response, Ocasio-Cortez ignored the question, rolled up her car window, and drove away.

If Ocasio-Cortez is telling the truth, her claims would corroborate allegations that migrants are abused in detention centers. However, she did not provide evidence to back her allegations.

On the other hand, witnesses who saw Ocasio-Cortez at a migrant facility near El Paso on Monday claimed she screamed at CBP agents “in a threatening manner” for unknown reasons.

Meanwhile, Washington Examiner reporter Anna Giaritelli reported that CBP agents did not instruct a migrant to drink from a toilet. Rather, a migrant drank from a toilet over confusion on how to operate the sink/toilet combination used at detention centers, similar to those used in jails.
