On Monday’s radio program, Glenn Beck and Pat Gray explained why a rapper pulled out of performing at the Aug. 3 music festival in Detroit.

According to Detroit Metro Times‘ Twitter account, a Detroit-based rapper named Tiny Jag pulled her act from the AfroFuture Festival lineup after learning that white people were being charged $20 for admission while black people were charged $10.

According to TheBlaze, Jillian Graham, who goes by “Tiny Jag,” became enraged when she learned about the race-based pricing.

“I was immediately enraged just because I am biracial,” Graham told the Detroit Metro Times. “I have family members that would have, under those circumstances, been subjected to something that I would not ever want them to be in … especially not because of anything that I have going on,” Graham said.

“It seems almost like it has spite, and unfortunately with spite comes hate, and that’s just not obviously going to be a good direction for us to go if we’re looking for positive change,” she added.

Organizers explained the racial discrepancy on their “frequency asked question” page:

Our ticket structure was built to insure that the most marginalized communities (People of Color) are provided with an equitable change at enjoying events in their own community (Black Detroit).

Affording joy and pleasure is unfortunately still a privilege in our society for POC and we believe that everyone should have access to receiving such.

The backlash prompted the festival organizer to remove the race-based tiers.

Glenn wondered what would have happened is a festival would have charged black people more to see Barry Manilow play polka music.
