Democrats on the House Oversight Committee made a few embarrassing mistakes this week, twice using photos taken during the Obama administration to promote a hearing on “kids in cages” at U.S. migrant detention centers.
What are the details?
On Wednesday, the subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties held a forum called, “Kids in Cages: Inhumane Treatment at the Border,” promising to “examine the impact of the Trump administration’s deterrence policies on the humanitarian crisis at the border” and the “lack of accountability for abuse and misconduct at detention facilities.”
Leading up to the event, the Oversight Committee Democrats tweeted out an advisory to promote it, including a picture showing migrants kids lying down behind chain link fencing.
The photo was removed after President Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign account correctly pointed out that the photo was from 2014, “when Joe Biden was Vice President.”
Undeterred, the House Democrats gave it another shot, and sent out a second promotional tweet with a different photo. It, too, was abruptly removed, after the Oversight Committee Republicans pointed out to their colleagues, “You all know that’s a picture from 2014, right? Remind us who was President then.”
According to Fox News, Republicans “generally do not dispute that there currently are poor conditions in detention centers at the border” amid an ongoing crisis which has worsened in recent months. But many Democrats have refused to acknowledge similar conditions at detention facilities during the Obama era.
