The Philadelphia Police Department’s homicide unit says that a male carjacking suspect is dead after being beaten to death, according to WCAU-TV.
What are the details?
The incident took place on Thursday night after the 54-year-old suspect reportedly attempted to steal a 25-year-old woman’s car with her children inside.
The woman arrived at a local pizza shop to visit her boyfriend during the fateful incident, leaving her three young children in the car. The children are aged seven months, one year, and five years. The unnamed woman left the car running while she entered the pizza shop to visit with their father, who worked there.
While the woman was inside the pizza shop, the suspect reportedly attempted to make off with her vehicle, and sped off with the children still inside.
The woman’s boyfriend — also the children’s father — raced off to apprehend the suspect, and was able to meet up with him a half-block later when the suspect reportedly got stuck in traffic.
The unnamed father then reportedly pulled the suspect out of the car and began beating him. Police say that other bystanders in the area who had witnessed the incident reportedly joined in on the attack against the suspect.
First responders arrived at the scene to discover the suspect unconscious and with severe head and facial injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities took the woman and her boyfriend into custody for questioning. Both are reportedly cooperating with the investigation.
Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said that the homicide unit and the District Attorney’s Office will determine if the father will face charges in connection with the incident.
