A small group of swing voters in swing-state Michigan had some surprising news for Democrats when they were polled, as the majority of them felt President Trump has been dealing with the problems at the southern border, “professionally and responsibly,” as Alexi McCammond of Axios reports.

McCammond writes that the Engagious/FPG focus group in Warren, Michigan, that she spoke to included “nine people who voted for Barack Obama in 2012 and Trump in ’16, and three who flipped from Mitt Romney to Hillary Clinton.” McCammond notes that the town is a “small blue area in a red county. It narrowly went for Clinton 51.9% to Trump’s 42.7%.” She adds, “Warren was one of the most divided areas in the county.”

McCammond writes that the “room got really animated when discussing their opposition to 2020 Democrats proposing to give health care to undocumented immigrants.” She offered various statements of the respondents, including:

Why would you want to give it to another person from a different country for free?

Give them free benefits, this that and the other thing. That is ridiculous. They’ll come from anywhere and get a house and a car, too.”

We need to focus on Americans and not the immigrants.

We shouldn’t give away our birthright like candy … Meaning that all they have to do is cross the border illegally, pop out a kid, and they’re a U.S. citizen. Two illegals do not a citizen make.

I don’t want to be a jerk. I feel terrible for these people, but there are people in this country who are struggling to survive. We need to focus on the United States.

There’s no end in sight. It’s just a frustrating, endless amount of people.”

We’re helping everybody else, so they’re coming here for free and we’re babying them. It’s time that we stop. We gotta think about us first.

Two-thirds of the respondents felt that the statement, “When we give migrants food, clothing, toiletries, and shelter, all we’re doing is encouraging more of them to come to the U.S., and we don’t want that” was accurate.

Macomb County, in which the town of Warren resides, went for Trump in 2016 by 48,351 votes out of roughly 420,000 cast.

After Trump’s 2016 victory, the Detroit News reported:

The New York real estate mogul won Michigan by 13,107 votes, according to unofficial results from the Secretary of State’s office. He won big in Macomb County, running up larger margins in rural areas and flipping 12 counties that voted for President Barack Obama four years ago, unofficial state results show. Voter turnout in Macomb County climbed 4 percent compared with 2012.

GOP strategist John Yob commented, ““Donald Trump over-performed in rural areas across the state as well as blue-collar areas such as Macomb County and has fundamentally changed the map so Republicans can win statewide with a different coalition.”

Then-Michigan GOP Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel added, “Macomb County has been huge for Trump. We’ve seen him outperforming in that county since the beginning. … In the U.P. and Up North areas as well, and the downriver areas. He has outperformed in areas that aren’t traditionally Republican,” as MLive reported.
