Former Vice President Joe Biden unleashed a racially-tinged gaffe and instead of responding with surprise, his audience applauded the blunder.
Biden was trying to highlight racial attitudes that led to unequal education outcomes when he accidentally equated being poor with minority students, and being rich with white students.
“And another thing we should do is we should challenge these students. We should challenge these students in these schools that have advanced placement programs in these schools,” Biden told an audience in Des Moines, Iowa.
“We have this notion that if you’re poor you cannot do it,” he said.
“Poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids!” he proclaimed.
The audience applauded as he tried to amend the the gaffe.
“Wealthy kids, black kids, Asian kids!” he added.
Biden was speaking to the Asian & Latino Coalition Coalition Town Hall event when he made the comments.
The rapid response team for the Trump 2020 campaign posted the video on social media, where it quickly got many views and retweets.
“Yikes… have fun mitigating that one,” responded Andrew Clark, the rapid response director.
