Officer Kody Taylor of the Andalusia, Alabama, police department said he pulled into a local McDonald’s drive-thru for lunch while on duty — and the subject of a law enforcement discount came up.
“The nice lady at the window says, ‘Give me just a second,'” Taylor noted, according to a screenshot of his Facebook post. “She walks off and returns with the manager and says, ‘Doesn’t law enforcement receive a discount?'”
Taylor said the manager stated, “Unfortunately we do.”
“This kind of caught me off-guard, but I waited while he punched in his code, and when he finished he glanced at me and said, ‘I don’t like y’all,'” the officer wrote, adding that won’t eat at the local McDonald’s any longer because of the treatment he received.
Following the incident over the weekend, the city of Andalusia noted on its own
Facebook page that the employee in question was fired, and the police chief met Monday with the general manager of the local McDonald’s along with the chain’s area supervisor as well as Eddie Byrd, director of marketing and community outreach for Murphy Family Restaurants.
“What occurred does not reflect the values of our brand, our franchise, or the love and admiration we have demonstrated consistently for our friends in law enforcement and first responders,” Byrd said. “We express our sincerest apology.”
The McDonald’s representatives also apologized to the officer and to the department, the city noted.
“As a department, we don’t hold McDonald’s responsible for one employee’s action,” Chief Paul Hudson said. “We want all of those who were upset when they learned about the incident to know McDonald’s immediately took action to correct the problem.”
Indeed the local McDonald’s offers a 50 percent discount to law enforcement officers and first responders when they are on duty.
