Protesters on Wednesday breeched Capitol Hill buildings, forcing Congress to halt proceedings and members to shelter in place.

Protesters were able to get inside the Capitol Building and were seen walking through Statuary Hall, just feet away from where the Senate is attempting to certify the electoral votes for the 2020 presidential election.

Police in tactical gear from multiple police agencies are rushing to the Hill. Pepper gas is reportedly being used, and members are being asked to put on gas mask and to evacuate. There are also reports of U.S. Capitol Police having drawn their guns to keep protesters off the House floor. The Senate chamber also reportedly been breeched.

One of the buildings is the Cannon Office Building, in which House members have their congressional offices. The other building is the Library of Congress Madison Building. Both are on Independence Avenue, within a couple hundreds yards away from the Capitol Building in which the House and Senate are meeting in a joint session to verify the electoral votes of the 2020 presidential election.

The scare came as thousands of protesters flooded D.C. streets in a “Stop the Steal” rally. Many of them walked a the short distance down Constitution Avenue from the White House, where President Trump spoke to them, to Capitol Hill.

Videos show protesters trying to breach entrances to Capitol buildings – breaking through police barriers and being stopped by law enforcement officers.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has declared a 6 p.m. curfew.
