Patty Hajdu, the Minister of Health, said on Saturday that her government is looking for a way to certify vaccines, and that this certification will be a requirement for Canadians to travel.

“Canadians need to be able to have the right kind of certification for international travel because, as we know, Canadians will want to travel internationally, and they will want to make sure they have the right credentials to do that from a vaccination perspective,” commented the minister in an interview with CBC.

Prime Minister Trudeau has also publicly supported the measure, saying that the so-dubbed “vaccine passports” are “naturally to be expected when it comes to this pandemic and the coronavirus.

Also, the Trudeau administration is in contact with the Biden administration and the EU regarding the latter’s “Digital Green Certificate” program, a virtual “vaccine passport” for which Americans and Canadians may soon be eligible.

“I am meeting on a regular basis with my G7 counterparts and this is an ongoing conversation about how that might look and how we might be able to have some sort of standardized approach to this,” said Hajdu to CBC National Editor Chris Hall.

Said Melita Gabric, the EU ambassador to Canada:

“I would say that our goal is to open the borders as soon as possible … when it is safe to do so, safe for Europeans and safe for visitors from other countries, including from Canada.”

Gabric then added: “European countries can decide to waive certain public health restrictions currently in place, such as testing or quarantine based on proof of vaccination.”

Hajdu mentioned that Canada is looking at possibly using and/or adapting their own or another similar app in order to achieve international compliance:

“From our perspective we have a bit of a head start in terms of entry into Canada in that we have ArriveCan, the app that allows for digital proof of testing … and a variety of other documents that people have to submit to enter Canada.”
