Rapper Eminem pulled a Colin Kaepernick during the Super Bowl 56 halftime show this weekend; the forty-nine year old rapper dropped to one knee after the performance of his hit song “Lose Yourself.” Similar forms of silent protest were used by QB Colin Kaepernick back in 2016 to raise awareness of police brutality and racial inequality.

According to the Hill, “NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told The Hill officials knew the rapper’s move was planned.

“We watched all elements of the show during multiple rehearsals this week and were aware that Eminem was going to do that,” McCarthy said in an emailed statement.

“A player or coach could have taken a knee and there would have been no issue so there was no reason to tell an artist she or he could not do so,” he added.

But the rap icon’s move comes as the NFL faces new, more recent scrutiny over race-related allegations from former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores,” the Hill reports.

“Flores filed a lawsuit accusing the league and three of its teams including the Dolphins, New York Giants and Denver Broncos of racially discriminatory hiring practices.”

In his complaint, Flores said the NFL is run “much like a plantation.”
