One police officer is dead and two others wounded after the three responded to a domestic violence call in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Thursday afternoon.

The late officer, a 40-year veteran, was due to retire in May, the Associated Press reported Friday.

What are the details?

Police responded to a call for a domestic incident around 3:30 p.m. and were barraged with a hail of gunfire when they arrived.

Authorities said the 34-year-old suspect, Travis Shaud, was killed during a shootout with police officers. The attack killed 63-year-old Lebanon City Police Lt. William Lebo and injured Officers Ryan Adams, 34, and Derek Underkoffler, 32. Adams and Underkoffler remain hospitalized. Their conditions are unknown at the time of this reporting.

Lebanon County District Attorney Pier Hess Graf said that Shaud — who had a record of mental illness — had a history of domestic assault.

In a Thursday night statement, Lebanon Police Chief Todd Breiner said, “As one can imagine, it’s clearly a traumatic event. Our guys are strong, but we’re human and we have families.”

The Lebanon County district attorney’s office is conducting an investigation into the incident.

During a Friday news conference, Graf reported that the incident unfolded when Shaud broke into a family member’s residence and refused to leave, prompting the resident to call police.

“Police responded and attempted to enter the home. Shaud immediately opened fire upon four city police officers,” a statement from the D.A.’s office noted. “Officers returned fire; Shaud was pronounced dead on scene. One injured officer radioed for help. Surrounding police departments responded and carried the wounded to safety. Officers performed life-saving measures on Lieutenant Lebo to no avail.”

“Family attempts to intervene, to provide assistance, were met with his utter resistance,” Graf added.

Lebanon Mayor Sherry Capello said that Lebo will not be forgotten.

“In a moment that will be remembered as a sad day in the city of Lebanon, a Lebanon City officer was fatally injured,” Capello said.
