Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio pleaded not guilty Tuesday to conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding and other felony counts in connection to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Federal prosecutors allege Tarrio led a plan to prevent Congress from certifying now-President Joe Biden’s 2020 election win – though Tarrio was not in the capital on January 6, 2021.

A federal magistrate judge previous ruled that Tarrio must remain in jail while awaiting trial. He issued his plea at a virtual hearing.

If convicted, Tarrio is facing a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. He is facing charges alongside five other co-defendants affiliated with the group.
