It’s, uh, it’s really something. “Edgy,” one might say.

The video isn’t a Ukrainian government production (I think), just something floating around online that’s made a splash in Russian state media. You see, the degenerates who are cheering on war crimes in Bucha and saying things like “Finish off the Nazi scum” on Russian television are offended that this clip depicts the killing of a Russian. And not even a “real” Russian: The scene is obviously an allegory of the war, with Ukraine represented by a woman in traditional Ukrainian dress finishing off the brute who’s tried to ravage her.

As Russian soldiers go around slitting throats in Ukraine, in other words, their apologists are mortified that Ukrainians might fantasize about slitting one of theirs.

Emmanuel Macron gently scolded Biden this morning for describing the war as a “genocide,” declining to use such a term “because these two peoples [Russians and Ukrainians] are brothers.”

Brothers?

Does he mean in the Cain-and-Abel sense?

Russia broke international humanitarian law by deliberately targeting civilians during its invasion of Ukraine, and those who ordered attacks on a maternity hospital and theater turned shelter in the besieged city of Mariupol committed war crimes, experts from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe determined in a fact-finding report published Wednesday…

“Taken as a whole, the report documents the catalogue of inhumanity perpetrated by Russia’s forces in Ukraine,” Michael Carpenter, U.S. ambassador to the OSCE, said in a speech Wednesday. “This includes evidence of direct targeting of civilians, attacks on medical facilities, rape, executions, looting, and forced deportation of civilians to Russia.”

An aide to the mayor of Mariupol says he has reason to believe the Russians are planning to hold a “victory carnival” there on May 9, the date Russia commemorates V-E Day, which would be tantamount to dancing on the graves of somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 Ukrainians. Meanwhile in Moscow, media genocidaires are crying crocodile tears over the “welcome to hell” clip, comparing it to an ISIS video while exploiting it as further justification for mass slaughter:

The clip was obsessively aired by state TV show 60 Minutes in its entirety on Monday. “Animalistic cruelty is becoming the norm,” complained state TV host Evgeny Popov. He added: “Blind hatred is being promoted to incite average people. The methods of ISIS head-cutters organically fit in with Ukrainian politics. Somebody decided that this kind of bigotry will improve morale… There are now much fewer of those who still didn’t understand what ‘de-nazification’ stands for and why it’s needed.”

Indeed, Popov’s wife and co-host Olga Skabeeva has previously described the process of “de-nazification” as liquidation that might be done by beheading—or, as she put it, “knocking heads off”—during another broadcast of 60 Minutes. She echoed the statements of State Duma member and chairman of Russia’s nationalist Rodina party Aleksey Zhuravlyov, who also said during a discussion on the same show that “de-nazification” should be conducted by shootings or beheadings. He, too, was present in the studio on Monday, expressing outrage at the video—but not the real violence unfolding in Ukraine.

These Nazis are horrible which is why we need Russian einsatzgruppen is a perfect summary of the Kremlin’s Orwellian spin on the war. Popov went on to say that the Ukrainian actress in the clip “is no longer a human” and should spend the rest of her life worried that Russians will find her and murder her, which certainly doesn’t sound Nazi-like in its logic to me.

Anyway, fine people, fine culture.

If you missed it a few days ago, I recommend this post speculating on how far Russia might be willing to go to punish the Ukrainians who’ve embarrassed them so terribly. Tell yourself enough times that your enemies are Nazis one and all and you can talk yourself into doing anything to crush them. That’s why I’m unwilling to criticize the Ukrainian video as “unhelpful” inasmuch as it feeds into Russian propaganda about Ukraine’s population being a group of murderous demons. We’re already at the point of mass murder; Russia’s going to find whatever pretext it needs to keep the blood spilling.
