By 15 weeks of pregnancy, an unborn baby can suck her thumb and hiccup. She already is showing a preference for her right or left hand, and doctors can detect her brain waves and hear her heartbeat from outside the womb.

Most Americans believe that, at least by this stage, if not sooner, unborn babies should be protected from abortion. This is reflected in poll after poll after poll after poll.

But U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi does not.

Recently, the Democrat leader avoided a question about unborn babies’ humanity when asked about the U.S. Supreme Court hearing a Mississippi case about banning abortions after 15 weeks.

“Is an unborn baby at 15 weeks a human being?” a reporter asked Pelosi in June.

Pelosi did not answer the question directly, responding: “Let me just say that I am a big supporter of Roe v. Wade. I am a mother of five children in six years. I think I have some standing on this issue as to respecting a woman’s right to choose.”

When the reporter asked again, Pelosi ignored the question.

The California politician’s comments resurfaced this week after news outlets reported about a leaked draft opinion on the Mississippi case that overturns Roe v. WadeChief Justice John Roberts confirmed the draft is real but cautioned that it “does not represent a decision by the Court or the final position of any member.”

After the leak, Pelosi expressed outrage that the Supreme Court may allow states to protect unborn babies from abortion again, calling it a “monstrous” decision, Fox News reports.

“This monstrous draft decision is a sweeping and severe restriction of Americans’ rights,” she said. “With it, Trump, McConnell and Republicans in Congress have assaulted privacy, precedent and the Constitution.”

If the court does overturn Roe, states would be allowed to protect the most basic human right, the right to life, of unborn babies again. Currently, the 1973 ruling forces states to legalize abortions without limits up to viability, about 23 weeks, and allows states to legalize abortions up to birth.

However, Pelosi argued that killing unborn babies in elective abortions is a “human right.” Once, she even called late-term abortions “sacred ground.”

“As drafted, Justice Alito’s argument — that women are not entitled to basic human rights today because they have been denied those rights for generations — is alarming and extremist,” Pelosi said Tuesday. “… radical Republican-appointed Justices are poised to inflict unthinkable suffering on tens of millions of families across our country, especially in communities of color and low-income communities.”

Americans disagree. In the past 49 years, more than 63 million unborn babies and hundreds of mothers have died in supposedly “safe, legal” abortions under Roe.

These past five decades have made it clear that unborn babies are unique and irreplaceable living human beings who deserve a right to life. Society now can see first-hand as unborn babies suck their thumbs, wave or kick on an ultrasound screen. Ultrasound technology also has revealed the horrors of abortion, showing unborn babies silently scream and fight for their lives while they are being killed in abortions.

Scientific research confirms the humanity of unborn babies, too. It is now well-accepted science that a unique, individual human life begins at conception, and growing research indicates unborn babies can feel intense pain by 15 to 20 weeks of pregnancy, if not sooner.

All this and more has led the public — and potentially the U.S. Supreme Court – to recognize that Roe v. Wade was a horrible ruling and unborn babies deserve protections under the law.
