(CNSNews.com) – The number of people working for government in the United States grew by 22,000 in April, according to the employment report released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In March, there were 22,167,000 people employed by government in this country. In April, that grew to 22,189,000.

This growth in government employment was driven by hiring at the state and local level, while federal employment actually declined.

In local governments, employment grew from 14,091,000 in March to 14,112,000 in April—an increase of 21,000.

In state governments, employment grew from 5,200,000 in March to 5,207,000 in April—an increase of 7,000.

In the federal government, employment declined from 2,876,000 in March to 2,870,000 in April—a decrease of 6,000.

Government employment peaked in the United States in January 2020, when it hit 22,784,000. It has since declined by 595,000 to the current level of 22,189,000.
