(CNSNews.com) – President Joe Biden issued a proclamation on Thursday, not about abortion but about COVID.

“We must do everything we can to save as many lives as possible,” he said, as he marked what he called “a tragic milestone…on million American lives lost to COVID-19.”

“Jill and I pray for each of them,” Biden said.

Biden said the nation must “not grow numb” to sorrow, and “we must remember” as part of the healing process.

His proclamation said:

“In memory of the one million American lives lost to COVID-19 and their loved ones left behind, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and on all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset May 16, 2022.

“I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same period at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”

Biden urged continued vigilance against the pandemic: “We must do everything we can to save as many lives as possible.”

Likewise, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) opened her Thursday news conference on a somber note:

“Good morning. Good morning. It’s not such a good morning,” she said. “Today on the steps of the Capitol, we will be observing one million deaths from COVID,” she said.

Pelosi called it a “terrible toll” and sent her “condolences” to everyone affected.

She then plugged the multi-billion COVID relief bill pending in Congress.
