Chicago is a proud sanctuary city, giving refuge to undocumented immigrants and protecting them from immigration agents.

But that did not stop officials from promptly sending migrants away after they arrived on buses from the southern border thanks to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R).

What happened?

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) blasted Abbott this week when the first busload of migrants arrived from Texas. The Democratic mayor suggested that Abbott is treating humans like “freight” and “cargo.”

Those sharp accusations, however, did not stop those migrants from immediately being bused out of the Windy City.

According to WGN-TV, dozens of migrants sent to Chicago have been “relocated” to the nearby suburb of Burr Ridge. The town is located in DuPage County, which, unlike Cook County where Chicago is located, is not a sanctuary locality for immigrants, the DuPage Policy Journal noted.

Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso (R) said he was never contacted by state officials before the migrants showed up.

“I’m the mayor of the village, I should have been told,” he said, WLS-TV reported. “I’m as frustrated as Mayor Lightfoot was in her not being told. I’m frustrated, but we’re dealing with the situation, and I’m going to keep my residents and my businesses apprised.”

The migrants were dropped off on Sept. 7.

Anything else?

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) on Thursday condemned Abbott for treating migrants like “cattle.”

“What the governor of Texas is doing is disgusting, and it needs to stop,” the governor said, WGN reported. “It shouldn’t be that the governor of Texas is taking these people and treating them like cattle, treating them like property, putting them on buses and sending them wherever he wants to send them.”

It’s not clear how busing migrants to Chicago is any different than Chicago busing migrants to nearby suburbs.

Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) are busing migrants to sanctuary cities — like New York City, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. — because such localities are the perfect place for migrants, they argue. Because of their “sanctuary” status, the cities have promised to care for the needs of immigrants and shield them from immigration authorities.

But like Lightfoot, Mayors Eric Adams (D) and Muriel Bowser (D) have complained for weeks about the flood of migrants in their cities. D.C. Councilmember Brianne Nadeau (D) even whined on Thursday that her city has become a “border town.”
