Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas excoriated a call from three medical organizations demanding that the Justice Department investigate and prosecute people exposing providers of radical transgender surgeries and demanded to know if the DOJ prompted the letter.

Cruz sent the letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Tuesday in response to an Oct. 3 letter signed by the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Children’s Hospital Association.

“This request by advocacy organizations to have the federal government stifle critical speech on their behalf would have been unthinkable before your tenure as Attorney General,” wrote Cruz.

He went on to detail how the White House had been implicated in soliciting a letter from the National School Boards Association that called for a law enforcement intervention against parents who were objecting to far-left lessons being taught in public schools. The NSBA later apologized for calling parents “domestic terrorists” in the letter.

“Your actions in regard to the NSBA letter sent an inappropriate message that federal law enforcement can and will be used to aid one side of a political debate, and to either silence or chill the speech of the other,” Cruz continued.

“We call upon you to reaffirm that you will faithfully protect the First Amendment rights of all Americans to peacefully debate this and all other policy questions, irrespective of viewpoint,” Cruz concluded. “The weaponization of federal law enforcement agencies like the DOJ, in order to produce preferred policy outcomes, cannot continue — or democracy depends on it.”

The letter went on to demand Garland answer whether the DOJ had solicited the letter from any of the three medical organizations or their representatives.

Transgender activists and their allies have decried popular online accounts like Libs of TikTok which have exposed the more extreme side of the LGBTQ movement. Defenders of these efforts point out that they are only reposting what many on the left are openly publishing on public social media sites.

The letter was signed by Cruz and four other senators including Republicans Mike Lee of Utah and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee.
