Pennsylvania Democrat Senate nominee John Fetterman in his debate Tuesday night with GOP challenger Dr. Mehmet Oz said has “always supported” fracking, despite previously having called the industry a “stain on our state.”

“I have always supported fracking, and I always believe independence with energy is critical,” Fetterman said in the contest’s only debate.

However, Fetterman had a different stance on the issue in 2018, when he said: “I don’t support fracking at all.”

In 2016, he said: “I’m not pro-fracking and have stated that if we did things right in this state, we wouldn’t have fracking,” according to The Washington Times. “The industry is a stain on our state and natural resources.”

When asked about his previous comments at the debate, Fetterman said: “I, I, I, I do support fracking and I don’t, I don’t, I support fracking, I stand, and I do support fracking.”

Fetterman had difficulty speaking as a resulting he suffered in May.
