House Oversight and Reform Committee Ranking Member Rep. James Comer, R-La., has warned Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that Republicans would seek to hold him and his agency accountable for the ongoing crisis at the southern border should they win in next week’s midterm elections.

“We cannot endure another year of the Biden Administration’s failed border policies,” Comer and his fellow committee Republicans wrote to Mayorkas, per the Washington Times. “We have written DHS fifteen times this Congress to conduct oversight over the border crisis. Again, we request documents and information to understand the Biden Administration’s plans, if any, to secure the border.”

The Times highlighted the Republicans’ labelling of Mayorkas’s performance an “abject failure.”

“President Biden’s border crisis continues to break all the wrong records,” Comer said in a separate statement, per the outlet. “Oversight Committee Republicans are committed to holding the Biden Administration accountable for its dereliction of duty to secure the border. The American people demand transparency and accountability.”

Customs and Border Protection released its immigration figures for September late last month, which revealed a record 2.4 million migrant encounters at the southern border in fiscal year 2022.

Apart from migrants, the porous border under Mayorkas’s leadership has also seen a staggering rise in drug trafficking operations. CBP announced Wednesday that it had seized 2.2 tons of illegal drugs across two busts in just two days.
