Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy said Friday that he and House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy are “making progress” toward a deal to get enough votes to make McCarthy speaker of the House.
“We are making progress… but don’t let the sharks confuse the ongoing engagement,” Roy tweeted in response to a post stating he and McCarthy had reached a deal.
McCarthy reportedly said to his GOP House conference earlier that he is in a “good position” with the roughly 20 conservative members of his conference who are withholding their votes to block him from becoming speaker.
“I’m not telling you we have an agreement,” McCarthy also reportedly said. “I am telling you we are in a good position and having meetings.
McCarthy has fallen short of the simple majority needed to win speaker during 11 rounds of voting due to the group of about 20 consistently voting against him. The House is set to reconvene at noon.
