The Three Amigos summit in Mexico wrapped up on Tuesday with a joint press conference. Joe Biden, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) of Mexico, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada were all smiles. During the press conference, Biden took the opportunity to slam his critics – especially Republicans – for not working with him on his policy agenda on immigration. What a joke.
Joe Biden wanted to concentrate on a more woke agenda, like climate change, during the summit, but the reality of the Biden border crisis was included on the agenda. Naturally, when Biden went to thank AMLO for agreeing to take back 30,000 illegal migrants each month, he botched the number. Instead of saying 30,000, he thanked AMLO for taking back 3,000. The man has no clue about anything.
“I want to thank the president of Mexico for agreeing to take up to 3,000 people back,” Mr. Biden said, apparently referring to the announcement last week that Mexico would accept 30,000 migrants each month from Venezuela, Haiti, Nicaragua and Cuba who attempt to cross into the United States illegally.
That increased enforcement at the border has been condemned by Democrats and human rights groups as an inhumane denial of asylum rights. But Mr. Biden said on Tuesday that the creation of new legal immigration programs for people from those countries counterbalanced that effort.
“There can no longer be any question, none, in today’s interconnected world. We cannot wall ourselves off from shared problems,” Mr. Biden said, adding, “We’re trying to make it easier for people to get here.”
Hypocrisy knows no limits with Joe Biden. Biden lives behind a wall when he’s in any of his homes in Delaware, thanks to the American taxpayer. Walls work. He clearly believes that, too, or he would not use them for his own personal security at home.
Biden basked in the nice words AMLO delivered during the press conference. When he complimented Biden as the first president in many years not to build any part of a wall along the border, Biden didn’t correct him.
At the news conference after the summit, Mr. López Obrador delivered a lengthy history of the changes in migration patterns over the past several decades and emphasized his belief that the best way to prevent people from leaving their homes was to invest in making their countries prosperous and safe.
He praised Mr. Biden for what he said was a recognition of that reality while criticizing past American presidents for focusing too heavily on trying to keep migrants out of the country.
“You are the first president of the United States in a very long time that has not built not even one meter of wall,” Mr. López Obrador said. “And that — we thank you for that, sir.”
Fact check: In July 2022, Biden approved a plan to complete a section of the border wall near Yuma, Arizona. The wall was begun during the Trump administration and Biden’s plan, also approved by DHS Sec. Mayorkas, fills in four major gaps in the wall that allow the Yuma area to be one of the busiest corridors for illegal migrant crossings. Biden likely has forgotten that, if he ever knew it in the first place.
Not to leave anyone out, AMLO also smacked Texas Governor Abbott, though he wasn’t quite ballsy enough to mention him by name. Nonetheless, his intent was clear.
The Mexican president also took a veiled swipe at Greg Abbott, the Republican governor of Texas, who bused a group of migrants to Washington last month and dropped them off in frigid weather in front of the Naval Observatory, the home for Vice President Kamala Harris.
“This is politicking. This is completely inhuman,” Mr. López Obrador said, referring to “one of the governors” in a “neighboring country” in his remarks. “And this should not be done.”
Biden and his amigos discussed enforcement against drug and weapon trafficking along the southern border. The White House said the leaders agreed to increase information sharing. If they aren’t actually acting with enforcement, though, it’s all just talk. The Biden border crisis has brought the success of drug cartels to new levels along the border.
Other issues on Tuesday’s agenda included renewed efforts to combat trafficking of drugs and weapons in North America. Biden administration officials have been frustrated in the past two years with what they say is a lack of Mexican cooperation in drug investigations.
The White House fact sheet said the leaders had agreed to strengthen the North American Drug Dialogue to increase information sharing and to enhance collaboration among all three nations on nuclear security and safety.
Another foreign trip, another chance for President Unity to trash critics, calling out Republicans, in particular. Remember when we had presidents who didn’t do that? Politics stopped at the water’s edge. That would include the Rio Grand River, too.
