Michelle Obama is charging as much as $4,200 for tickets to her upcoming event dubbed, “A Moderated Conversation with Michelle Obama,” according to the New York Post.
The former First Lady is scheduled to appear at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, for the November 3 event “A Moderated Conversation with Michelle Obama”:

The most expensive ticket is listed for $4,200, giving the attendee a “suite-level ducat,” according to the New York Post.
Meet and greet tickets are selling for $2,500. The VIP package allows groups of two to take a picture with Obama, but Ticketmaster specifies that individual pictures and autographs will not be permitted.
“Free hard cover copy of Michelle Obama’s book, Becoming. Refreshments served First 2 rows, floor seating,” Ticketmaster adds.
The cheapest tickets are listed for $144 for two. Individual tickets appear to be available for $104. Floor seats are “as high as $1,300,” the Post adds.
The event comes on the heels of Obama’s Becoming tour, which also featured costly tickets.
As the Hill reported in September 2018:

Just handfuls of tickets for former first lady Michelle Obama’s book tour — where packages can sell for as much as $3,000 — are left at some of the stadiums where she’ll be appearing.
The cheapest single ticket available to Obama’s “Becoming” talk at a Nov. 25 stop in Washington was $850 on Friday, shortly after sales were open to the general public.

At a Boston stop, the least-expensive seats were running more than $400 on Friday, while in Detroit just a single $180 standard ticket was left, with the next cheapest pass running $775.

Similarly, Obama’s Becoming meet and greet packages also went for roughly $2,500.
The Prudential Center event comes on the heels of reports of the Obamas’ purchase of a $15 million mansion in Martha’s Vineyard.

Bernie Sanders: 'We Are Going to Impose a Moratorium on Deportations'

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) told a group that he backs a moratorium on all deportations from the U.S., a video surfaced on Saturday revealed.
The socialist senator told a group that, under a Sanders administration, the U.S. would cease ICE raids and deportations.

“We’re gonna end the ICE raids which are terrorizing communities all across this country,” Sanders said.
“We are gonna impose a moratorium on deportations,” he continued. “There are some things that a president can do with executive orders.”

The latter is a new policy position, according to a senior policy adviser who spoke to CNN’s Annie Grayer:

NEW: During an event with Mijente Latinx leaders and organizers, Senator @BernieSanders was asked if he would call for a moratorium on deportations. Sanders said yes. A senior policy advisor on the campaign confirms to me this is new.

Sanders also told the group that Medicare for All and free college would extend to individuals residing in the U.S. illegally.
“Let me also say something of which I have gotten into trouble and people will criticize me for,” Sanders said.
“I am, as some of you know, supportive of a Medicare for All single-payer system and that means that everybody in the country has health care including the undocumented,” he continued.
“And mark my words. You’ll see 30-second attacking me for that,” Sanders warned before adding that he also supports providing illegal aliens with free college.
“And then you’ll see another set of 30-second ads because when I say I want to make public colleges and universities tuition-free, that also includes the undocumented,” Sanders continued.
“Now I hope that as soon as possible the undocumented will not be undocumented,” he added. “That’s the goal”:

Sanders’ official immigration reform plan includes expanding DACA, “fundamentally restructuring ICE,” and forging a path towards citizenship, according to his official website.

Omar Compares Migrant Shelters to Dungeons Used in African Slave Trade

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) compared migrant shelters in the U.S. to dungeons used during the African slave trade, according to a video that surfaced Saturday evening.
A video surfaced Saturday evening showing the far-left “Squad” member speaking to a group and comparing migrant shelters in the U.S. to dungeons used during the African slave trade:

[embedded content]
“We arrived in Ghana, and one of the first things we did was to visit what some would say is a castle, but they were dungeons,” Omar said.
“And I remember as we arrived one of the guides let us into the female dungeon, and he started giving us a description of what was– what used to take place as the Africans were being kept, were held there as captives,” she continued.
“And every time he gave a description I had this sort of flashback to an image that I saw on TV in Libya where you had Africans in a small room that were now captives, and that image was from today,” she added.
Omar explained that she could not help but notice a striking similarity between the dungeons and the migrant detention facilities used in the U.S. today:

And every time he would talk about the separation of the kids and from their parents and how they would have young girls be in the same dungeons as the women or they would have young boys be in the same dungeons as the men, I couldn’t stop seeing images of the current camps we have here our borders in the United States. And so of a story that happened 400 years ago I constantly had this reminder, this horrifying image, of many of the things that were taking place there in that dungeon now taking place, whether it is in in the shores of North Africa or in the shores of the United States.

Members of the “Squad” have been under fire in recent months for mischaracterizing migrant facilities, openly comparing them to “concentration camps”:

Last week, we called the concentration camps at the border for what they are.
In the week since:– Acting director of Customs & Border Patrol resigned– Bank of America announced they will stop financing for-profit immigrant detention & private prisons.
Words matter.

— Caleb Hull (@CalebJHull) June 21, 2019

Tlaib “absolutely” agrees and smears our country as running “concentration camps”
— Elizabeth Harrington (@LizRNC) July 15, 2019

Omar’s recent remarks, however, mark the first time a far-left member of the “Squad” publicly compared the shelters to dungeons used during the African slave trade.

'Beto' O'Rourke Confirms: ‘Yes’ I Want to Tear Down Border Walls

Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke (D) confirmed in an interview with Latino USA’s Maria Hinojosa Friday that he is in favor of physically tearing down existing sections of the wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
“So Beto I just want to be clear. Have you said you want to tear down the wall?” Hinojosa asked. “If I’m elected, I will tear down that wall. Then suddenly the Democrat is quoting the Republican Ronald Reagan– tear down that wall.”

“Right. So the short answer is yes,” O’Rourke said. “I would include all local stakeholders.”
“There are more than 600 miles of wall and physical barriers now along that 2,000-mile border,” he continued, arguing that they are “not working.”
“In El Paso, we saw crime actually go up after the wall was constructed instead of coming down. It made us less – not more – safe. As an El Pasoan, I, for one, would want to take much of that wall down,” O’Rourke said.
However, the former Texas lawmaker said he would defer to other communities on whether or not they wanted to keep the physical barriers in their cities.
“If there are other places where a physical barrier – from the community’s perspective – is necessary or helpful and it already exists, I would to defer to them,” he said, decrying Democrats for advocating for the construction of physical barriers on the southern border.
“Unfortunately it’s not just Republicans who advocated in voting for building walls here. Democrats voted for the Secure Fence Act that provided the authorization and ultimately the funding to build the walls that we have,” he continued.
[embedded content]
During the third Democrat debate in Houston, Texas, Thursday evening, O’Rourke falsely claimed that the U.S. border wall kills “thousands” of illegal aliens.
“Democrats and Republicans, alike, voted to build a wall that has produced thousands of deaths of people trying to cross to join family or to work a job,” O’Rourke claimed.
As Breitbart News reported, O’Rourke’s claim is patently false:

As Breitbart News has reported, hundreds of border crossers and illegal aliens die every year while attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. President Trump has actually cut the rate at which illegal aliens are dying at the border with a number of new immigration controls to keep foreign nationals from attempting to cross in the first place.
While nearly 3,000 border crossers and illegal aliens died after crossing the southern border under the Obama administration’s eight years, existing physical barriers did not “produce” those deaths as suggested by O’Rourke.

This is not the first time O’Rourke has advocated for tearing down existing segments of the wall. He told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes in February that he would “absolutely” take the wall down:
[embedded content]

.@BetoORourke should answer a simple question tonight with respect to the border debate:
If you could snap your fingers and make El Paso’s border wall disappear, would you?
Because this DHS graph shows that when the wall was built, illegal crossings dropped significantly.
— Dan Crenshaw (@DanCrenshawTX) February 11, 2019

President Trump challenged O’Rourke in March.
“I see a new candidate in the mix, he wants to take down the walls. Try that sometime, you’ll see what will happen,” Trump said. “You’d have tens of millions of people coming in.”
“You want to see a mess? Take down that wall, you’ll see what will happen,” he added, referring to the wall in Tijuana.
The president reiterated the importance of finishing the wall during last week’s rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina, adding that “every inch of wall” is “vital.”
“And when you look at what’s happening with human trafficking — and it’s mostly women — they traffic in women, and they pour through our borders,” Trump said.
“Well, every inch of wall that we put up is vital, and we’re putting up miles and miles. And we intend by next year, at the end of the year, to have anywhere between four hundred and five hundred miles of wall built,” he continued.

Watch–Michelle Malkin Confronts Sanctuary County Official: 'Don't You Care About Women?'

During her sanctuary city tour for her latest book, Open Borders Inc: Who’s Funding America’s Destruction?, columnist Michelle Malkin confronted a Maryland sanctuary city official, asking him “Don’t you care about women?” following a series of alleged rapes and sexual assaults by illegal aliens in his jurisdiction.
Malkin, along with Angel Families and concerned Americans, protested in the sanctuary county of Montgomery County, Maryland in support for national borders, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, and immigration controls.

In less than two months, eight illegal aliens in Montgomery County have been arrested on rape or sexual assault charges against women and sometimes children. In the latest case, 26-year-old Oluwakayode Adewole Adebusuyi was freed by the sanctuary county before he allegedly went on to rape a woman in his car.

While protesting, Malkin confronted Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich over the Montgomery County Council’s recent statement in which they suggested residents opposed to illegal immigration are “Neo-Nazi sympathizers.”
“These individuals and organizations should be ashamed for spreading false information seeking to establish a baseless, illogical and xenophobic connection between a person’s failure to obtain legal status and their propensity to commit a sex crime,” the County Council said in a statement.
Malkin, in response, shouted to Elrich, “Don’t you care about women?” when he arrived across the street at the protest.
“Elrich, look this way,” Malkin said. “Call us Neo-Nazis to our face!”
“Hey, Elrich, turn around! Why are you here,” Malkin asked. “Listen to your constituents! Don’t you care about women? Elrich lies! Elrich smears! Resign! … Support our borders!”
“Hey, I’m brown! Talk to me! I’m a brown lady,” Malkin continued. “I care about my brown kids!”

“Come over here and smear me to my face,” Malkin said as she demanded the county “Uncuff ICE” agents from being able to properly enforce national immigration law.
Other most recent cases in Montgomery County involve a 21-year-old illegal alien from El Salvador who has been accused of molesting a 12-year-old girl and her younger brother, as well as a 46-year-old illegal alien from El Salvador accused of raping a 16-year-old girl at knifepoint.
To date, there are nine sanctuary states across the U.S., as well as nearly 200 counties, cities, and towns that have implemented sanctuary policies to shield criminal illegal aliens from deportation.

Pinkerton: Democrat Strategist Visits Trump Country to Find the Way to Beat Trump

The headline in The New York Times is nothing if not declarative: “The Republican Party Is Doomed.”  And the first lines of the opinion piece read, “The 2020 election will be transformative like few in our history. It will end with the death of the Republican Party as we know it.”
These provocative words come from veteran Democratic pollster Stanley Greenberg. Over the decades, Greenberg has worked for left-of-center political figures here and around the world, including Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Tony Blair and Nelson Mandela. And oh yes, Greenberg has a new book out, guaranteed to float the noodle of New York Times readers: RIP GOP: How the New America Is Dooming the Republicans.

Okay, that’s one man’s opinion, leavened with wishful thinking—and propped up by the Times. ,Indeed, there’s never a shortage of Democratic operatives eager to spew doom-and-gloom on the GOP.
Yet still, Greenberg can’t be quite so easily dismissed, because he’s not your typical Democratic politico—and he has an interesting record of insight into Trump voters and their political ancestry.
You see, Greenberg is more of a Franklin D. Roosevelt-type Democrat; that is, he’s actually interested in the working- and middle-classes and their kitchen-table-type concerns. And that FDR-ish perspective helps him see the appeal of Donald Trump, who carried much of the historic New Deal coalition in 2016—that is, Southern white Protestants and Northern Catholics. Furthermore, Greenberg maintains a certain detachment from trendier Democrats, who are more fascinated by the exotica of race, gender, and carbon dioxide.
Furthermore, an admirer of Greenberg’s at the Times, columnist Michelle Goldberg, bolsters his credibility by pointing to Hillary Clinton’s 2017 memoir, in which the failed Democratic nominee records that during the 2016 election season, Greenberg “thought my campaign was too upbeat on the economy, too liberal on immigration, and not vocal enough about trade.”
So we can see, from his Democratic vantage point, Greenberg was fully mindful of the populist political currents that carried Trump to a surprise victory in hard-hit Michigan and other blue-collar states—and thus carried him to the White House. Indeed, as he writes for the Times, in 2016, affluent “blue dot” Democrats, clustered on the coasts, were oblivious to red-state rage:

The elites who mostly live in America’s dynamic metropolitan areas were satisfied with America’s economic progress after the financial crash, but overall it helped make Donald Trump electable.  He understood how dissatisfied the country was with the status quo.

Of course, just because Greenberg was right about 2016 doesn’t mean he’ll be right about 2020. Yet still, his perspective is worth pondering—if only with an eye to making sure he is proven wrong.
Greenberg has, in fact, been studying meat-and-potatoes populists for a long time. Way back in 1985, in the wake of Ronald Reagan’s landslide re-election, he traveled to Macomb County, Michigan—a sprawl of suburbs, just north of Detroit, chock full of United Auto Workers—to conduct focus groups and polling research on why so many Democrats had become disaffected from their party.
For most of the 20th century, Macomb had, in fact, been a Democratic bastion; in the 1960 presidential election, it gave John F. Kennedy 63 percent of its vote. And yet by 1984, Macomb had flipped, giving Reagan 66 percent.  Yet interestingly, Democrats running for lesser office—not tarred with the brush of “San Francisco Democrat”-type national liberalism—also won in Macomb.
Still, the erosion of blue-collar support in such a large county—the third-largest in the Wolverine State—was alarming to the Democratic hierarchy, and so Greenberg was commissioned to figure out what was happening. In 1985, he published a report, observing that folks in Macomb distrusted the Democrats on issues such as crime and welfare; moreover, they liked Reagan because he stood up for “the little guy.” Yet at the same time, they mistrusted the Republican Party as a whole, and still tended to think of themselves as Democrats. Greenberg was thus inspired to coin the evocative phrase, “Reagan Democrat.”
As a result of Macomb’s partisan fluidity, Democratic candidates who could come across as at least somewhat centrist could still win there. And that was how Bill Clinton, campaigning on non-liberal “New Democrat” issues such as crimefighting and welfare reform, carried Macomb in 1996.
Even Barack Obama won the county in both 2008 and 2012. Of course, Obama got a lot of help when Mitt Romney published an op-ed in The New York Times, headlined, “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.” Romney was referring, of course, to the Big Three automakers, the employers of so many in Macomb—and in his dogmatic economic royalism, he was confirming blue-collar fears about his kind of Republicanism. Needless to say, he lost Michigan by almost 10 points.
In 2016, Donald Trump was free from such ideological dogmas; unlike Romney, he campaigned on actively helping blue-collar workers. And so Trump not only won Macomb in a landslide, he also carried Michigan for the first time in three decades—as well as, of course, other “blue wall” states.
For his part, Greenberg has been right there with Trump. Needless to say, he was never a supporter, and yet he was a close observer of Reagan Democrats who, over the years, had become MAGA Men and Women.
After the ’16 election, Greenberg returned once again to Macomb for more focus groups; in March 2017, he wrote:

These voters have not regretted their vote for Trump. There was no “buyer’s remorse.” None of the 35 participants in the course of the focus group discussion or in their private post-group post- cards to President Trump pulled back from their vote, which is an impressive indication of the strength of Trump’s support. They are clear about why they voted for him and pray he keeps his promises and succeeds.

Okay, so far, so good, Trump-wise. Still, just two months into the Trump administration, Greenberg ventured that the new president’s support could be weakened—and as a Democratic partisan, of course, he was eager to do just that. He found that the strongest attack line was the argument that Trump’s government was full of “million-dollar campaign donors, [bailed out] bankers from Goldman Sachs and people who used undocumented workers in their homes.”
Greenberg speculated that if Trump could be portrayed in Romney-royalist terms, Macomb folks might be open to a Democratic challenger offering a gritty populist message.  (As an aside, just the other day, another Times columnist, David Leonhardt, picked up Greenberg’s theme; writing from a strictly partisan perspective, Leonhardt urged Democratic presidential hopefuls to get off fringe issues, such as as slavery reparations, and get back to attacking Trump in populist terms: “They should be casting Trump as a plutocrat in populist’s clothes, who has used the presidency to enrich himself and other wealthy insiders at the expense of hard-working middle-class families.” It remains to be seen, of course, if the Democrats are interested, since they do seem to love those fringe issues.)
The following year, Greenberg visited Macomb yet again, and in May 2018 he once more updated his findings. By now, he had detected a faltering in Trump’s support, especially among women under age 45.
To be sure, some might be tempted to accuse Greenberg of tilting his findings to give the Democrats something to cheer about. Yet in fact, in the 2018 midterm elections, Michigan’s Democrats were cheered; their gubernatorial and senatorial candidates each won Macomb, albeit narrowly.
Of course, the 2018 midterms do not prove a thing about the 2020 general election; last year’s blue wave could still hit next year’s red wall. Indeed, every day brings news of just how far the Democratic presidential hopefuls are moving to the left, on issues ranging from guns to climate change to border security—and these leftward lurches could make any of them un-electable.
Or, as another possibility, Democrats could heed Greenberg’s advice and seek to recover their potent FDR heritage—enough of it, at least—thereby possibly turning the ’20 election into something far different.
Yes, Greenberg seems more than a little overwrought when he opines that the Republican Party is at risk of crashing and shattering. (Not that Michelle Goldberg and her like-minded colleagues at the Times would ever wish to argue.)
Almost certainly, both parties are going to be around for a long time to come—even though they might continue to change their positions.
As of this writing, the only thing we can be sure of is that Middle Americans—in Macomb and elsewhere—will be the deciding vote next year. Based on changing circumstances, they have shifted before, and they can shift again.  So no candidate, in either party, should be complacent about Middle America’s partisan loyalty.

Trump Celebrates ‘Historic Milestone’ of 150th Judge Confirmed: 'Amazing!'

President Trump celebrated the Senate confirmation of his 150th judicial nominee in a tweet Saturday, calling it “amazing!”
The Republican-led Senate confirmed Trump’s 150th judicial nominee on Wednesday– a significant milestone that continues to fill one of the president’s key campaign promises of putting Constitutional conservative judges in the courts.

According to the Washington Times:

Six district court nominees won confirmation Wednesday, bringing the president’s total number of appointed judges to the lower federal courts to 105. Mr. Trump has also appointed 43 circuit court nominees and two Supreme Court justices since taking office.

The Times notes that Trump’s judicial confirmations surpass those of Obama’s– “who only saw 20 circuit court nominees and 74 district court judges confirmed during the same period of time.”
Trump celebrated the news on Twitter, calling it a “historic milestone” and “amazing”:

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) also released a celebratory statement last week.
“I’m very pleased that the Senate has confirmed 150 federal judges thus far in President Trump’s first term. This is a historic milestone,” Graham wrote.
“As Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I will continue to push through highly qualified, conservative judges at all levels of the federal courts,” he continued.
“These conservative judicial appointments will impact our nation for years to come,” he added.

Biden Promises to Release Medical Records amid Mounting Health Concerns

Former Vice President Joe Biden (D) vowed to release his medical records during a conversation with reporters Friday amid mounting concerns over his general state of health.
Biden told reporters Friday that he will release his medical records following his next physical, which he says will occur before the Iowa caucuses take place.

“There’s no reason for me not to release my medical records,” Biden said, according to the Daily Mail.
Biden has been facing mounting questions and criticisms regarding the state of his mental and physical health following a string of gaffes and brain freezes on the campaign trail in recent weeks.
During a campaign stop in Keene, New Hampshire, last month, Biden mistakingly praised the beauty of the neighboring state, Vermont, after being asked about the quintessential New England town:

Biden talks w/press in Keene, NH: “I love this place. Look, what’s not to like about Vermont in terms of the beauty of it? And what a neat town…everybody has been really friendly. I like Keene a lot.”
— Bo Erickson (@BoKnowsNews) August 24, 2019

He also confused Burlington, Vermont, with Burlington, Iowa, the week prior.
Julián Castro (D) also questioned Biden’s memory during the presidential debate in Houston, Texas, Thursday night after a heated debate on the former vice president’s health care proposals:

BIDEN: They do not have to buy in. They do not have to buy in.
CASTRO: You just said that. You just said that two minutes ago. You just two minutes ago that they would have to buy in.
BIDEN: Do not have to buy in if you can’t afford it.
CASTRO: You said they would have to buy in.
BIDEN: Your grandmother would not have to buy in. If she qualifies for Medicaid, she would automatically be enrolled.
CASTRO: Are you forgetting what you said two minutes ago? Are you forgetting already what you said just two minutes ago? I mean, I can’t believe that you said two minutes ago that they had to buy in and now you’re saying they don’t have to buy in. You’re forgetting that.

Biden’s aides reportedly called Castro’s dig a “low blow” but Biden admitted that he “could have done better” in the debate.
“I think I could have done better,” Biden told donors, according to the Daily Mail. “I will do better, God willing.”
Biden’s memory also failed him at least three other times during the Houston debate. He mistakingly referred to himself as a “congressman” and the current “vice president,” and he also called Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) “president.”
Additionally, he appeared to struggle to contain his teeth in his mouth, briefly slurring his speech while answering a question on gun control:

— Barstool Sports (@barstoolsports) September 13, 2019

During CNN’s climate change town hall the week before, Biden’s eye appeared to fill with blood, sparking additional concerns:

Poll: Majority of Hispanics Support Ending Welfare-Dependent Immigration

A majority of Hispanic Americans support President Trump’s seeking to prevent welfare-dependent legal immigrants from permanently resettling in the United States, a new poll finds.
In August, the Trump administration published a regulation that ensures legal immigrants would be less likely to secure permanent residency in the U.S. if they have used any forms of welfare in the past, including using subsidized healthcare services, food stamps, and public housing — saving American taxpayers billions.

The latest Harvard/Harris Poll finds Hispanic Americans, by a majority of 56 percent, support denying permanent residency to immigrants who are known to have used welfare or are likely to use welfare. Likewise, a majority of 65 percent of Hispanic Americans said illegal aliens should not be allowed to draw from taxpayer-funded welfare programs, as well as 71 percent of black Americans.
Overall, six-in-ten American voters support preventing welfare-dependent legal immigrants from permanently resettling in the U.S., including 62 percent of swing voters, 77 percent of Republicans, 60 percent of moderate voters, and 64 percent of white Americans.
The regulation, known as the “public charge” rule, is particularly popular among working and middle-class Americans who have no college degree. More than six-in-ten of these voters support the public charge rule, along with 65 percent of rural voters and 60 percent of suburban voters.
Almost eight-in-ten American voters, including 80 percent of swing voters, said illegal aliens should not be allowed to use taxpayer-funded welfare benefits, such as free public housing, food stamps, disability checks, and subsidized healthcare.
Even among Democrats and liberals, allowing illegal aliens to draw from public social programs is hugely unpopular. For example, about seven-in-ten Democrat voters said they opposed illegal aliens taking from taxpayer-funded welfare programs. More than six-in-ten liberal voters said the same.

Illegal Aliens in NYC To Be Eligible for Limited Affordable Housing as Rent Skyrockets
— John Binder 👽 (@JxhnBinder) August 23, 2019

The National Academies of Science released a report two years ago, noting that state and local American taxpayers are billed about $1,600 each year per immigrant to pay for their welfare, and immigrant households consume 33 percent more cash welfare than American citizen households.
A recent Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) study notes that about 63 percent of noncitizen households in the U.S. use at least one form of taxpayer-funded welfare, while only about 35 percent of native-born American households are on welfare. This means that noncitizen households use nearly twice as much welfare as native-born American households.
In California — with the largest noncitizen population in the country at almost 11 million or nearly 30 percent of the state’s total population — more than seven-in-ten, or 72 percent, of households headed by noncitizens are on at least one form of welfare. Compare that to the findings that only about seven-in-twenty, or 35 percent, of native-born households in California are on welfare.
Currently, there is an estimated record high of 44.5 million foreign-born residents living in the U.S. This is nearly quadruple the immigrant population in 2000. The vast majority of those arriving in the country every year are low-skilled legal immigrants who compete against working and middle-class Americans for jobs.

Sanders Addresses Emotional Veteran Who Threatened Suicide over Crippling Medical Debt

A veteran battling Huntington’s disease told Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) – who held a town hall in Carson City, Nevada, on Friday – that he is considering suicide due to the crippling amount of medical debt he has accumulated.
The veteran spoke at Sanders’ campaign event, telling the presidential candidate that he lost his health care coverage due to an “administrative mistake” and is now considering suicide due to the thousands of dollars – roughly $140,000 – he owes in medical bills.

“Now they’re saying that I didn’t re-sign or do something,” he told Sanders at the event. “I’m going to kill myself”:

Tough stuff to watch, but real — @AnnieGrayerCNN reports from Sanders event in Reno, NV:
— Greg Krieg (@GregJKrieg) September 14, 2019

“Stop it, you’re not going to kill yourself,” Sanders said, ultimately asking the man to speak with him privately following the event. According to CNN, Sanders and his wife ended up speaking to him following the town hall’s conclusion.
The details of their conversation are not immediately known, but CNN analyst Mark McKinnon praised the way Sanders handled the emotional situation.
“Also gave Sanders an opportunity to show humanity, which he doesn’t do very often,” McKinnon said. “I mean, he’s just this policy-driven guy but he handled that the right way: ‘I got you. Let’s do it quietly and alone.’”
“He didn’t try and take advantage of the moment for himself publicly on TV. And took it away quietly. Which is the right way. It was a great moment for him,” he added.
Sanders took direct aim at Joe Biden’s (D) health care proposal during the town hall at the Carson City Community Center.
“Apparently the Vice President thinks it’s just wonderful for people to be paying thousands of dollars per month in premiums and paying the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs,” Sanders, who has pushed Medicare for All as a key part of his policy platform, said.
“Well, I think those are problems,” he added, according to the Reno Gazette Journal.

Pennsylvania Democrat Under House Arrest After Driving Drunk

A Pennsylvania Democrat is serving a month of house arrest after pleading guilty to driving drunk, reports said.
Police said they were called after Rep. John Galloway, 59, who serves Bucks County, rear-ended another vehicle in a McDonald’s drive-thru in Swatara Township on May 14.

Reports revealed that this is Galloway’s second drunk driving arrest since 2011 when he was taken into custody after running a stop sign and failing a field sobriety test.
In a statement at the time, Galloway said he realized he needed to get help for his problem and promised to take the necessary steps toward recovery.
The statement continued:

I recognize that I have a problem. I should have recognized the problem the first time. I will seek treatment and will enter a rehab program as soon as possible. There are no excuses here. I apologize to my family and friends and to everyone in Bucks County who I am honored to represent. I will accept the consequences.

“His previous arrest was resolved by his participation in a diversion program designed for first-time, nonviolent offenders, so the May violation counts as his second offense,” according to
Galloway did participate in a month-long inpatient program in July and August, according to reports.
Upon his arrest in May, police found that Galloway had a blood alcohol level of around .16.
“That puts him in the highest BAC category—though according to his court record, the lawmaker pleaded to a lesser charge and was sentenced for having a BAC in the middle range,” according to WSKG.
In addition to a month of house arrest, Galloway was sentenced to five months’ probation. His license was also suspended, and he must do 50 hours of community service and participate in a safe driving program.
“I apologize for what happened and I look forward to putting that behind me,” he told reporters during a phone interview on Tuesday.

Felicity Huffman 14 Day Jail Sentence Sparks Outrage: 'A Man Spent 36 Years in Prison for Stealing $50 from a Bakery'

Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman is coming under intense fire after being sentenced to just 14 days in jail after she paid $15,000 to have her daughter’s SAT falsified.
CNN’s Ana Navarro was quick to share her thoughts on the matter and called out the hypocrosy in Huffman’s sentence.

“A man spent 36 years in prison for stealing $50 from a bakery,” Navarro wrote on Twitter. “Felicity Huffman got 14 days.”

Survivor contestant Eliza Orlins also expressed displeasure with the ruling in Huffman’s case.
“Felicity Huffman has been sentenced to 14 days in jail. Last week, the Manhattan DA recommended 30 days jail for stealing a loaf of bread,” Orlins said. “A few months ago, Manhattan DA recommended one year jail for a man who stole cough syrup and toothpaste from a Duane Reade. #injustice”

Author Raquel Cepeda also weighed in on the matter and called out the justice system’s rulings regarding race, saying Huffman’s ruling relates to white privilege. She wrote, “If only Black and Latinx Americans knew what it was like to serve 2 weeks for committing a felony. #WhitePrivilege”

Comedian Karlous Miller also reacted to Huffman’s ruling, questioning whether race had anything to do with it. “Black people, you ever heard of a 2 week prison sentence,” Miller asked in a tweet.

Civil rights activist Kristen Clarke took to Twitter to compare Huffman’s case to that of Kaleif Browder, a black man who was spent three years at Reiker’s Island and later commited suicide after his release.

Former ESPN host Jemele Hill joined in on calling out the hypocrisy of Huffman’s ruling, placing a “bet” that Huffman will not carry out the sentence.

In addition to Huffman’s 14 day jail sentence, she received a $30,000 fine, 250 hours of community service, and a year’s worth of probation.
As reported by Tom Ciccotta, “Huffman was accused of paying $15,000 in exchange for a specialized SAT proctor that would correct answers on her daughter’s exam. Huffman’s daughter scored 400 points higher on the doctored exam than she did on her previous SAT exam.”
“I am deeply sorry to the students, parents, colleges, and universities who have been impacted by my actions,” Huffman said in the courtroom before she was sentenced Friday. ”I am sorry to my daughter, Sophia, my daughter, Georgia, and my husband, Bill. I have betrayed them all.”
Ciccotta also reported: “Lori Loughlin, the former Full House actress, is due in court on October 2. Loughlin has been accused of paying $500,000 to have her two daughters admitted into the University of Southern California. As part of the alleged scam, Loughlin created fake athletic profiles by asking her daughters to pose on rowing equipment for photos even though they had never competed.”
